I love doing surprise cakes!

I am baking a fabulous cake for a lady's surprise tomorrow. It will be 4 layers of divine chocolate cake, with 3 layers of coconut filling, kind of like a mounds bar. All crumb coated in Sour Cream Ganache, the iced with French Buttercream.

This lady is actually a gifted cake artist herself, so I am pulling out all the stops! There will be pink roses, purple hydrangeas, bluebells, lily of the valley...something yellow too, not sure what yet. I will post a picture when the cake is done.

It's her 40th birthday. A wonderful milestone! I have never been crazy about doing "Over the Hill" cakes, with tombstones etc. Too negative! I take a more positive approach. I have the front of the cake be negative, drab looking, with little signs that say Bills, career worries, cranky babies... whatever is appropriate to the cake's honoree. Then, at the top of the cake, a big 40! all prettied up, and on the back of the cake, flowers everywhere, and the signs are about pleasurable things, like their hobbies, happy life events, retirement, and then at the base, their ultimate dream, whatever that is. Often, it's a golf green!

Much nicer way to celebrate 40.

O brave new world, that has such cakes in it....

There are worse things to obsess about than cakes.

And really, obsess is such a strong word. It's not like I forget to bathe, or fail to feed my children. My husband (the very best of men!) has never threatened to divorce me because I spend too much time in the kitchen.

It's just that I am so fascinated by cake designs, icing techniques, new recipes...I fall asleep thinking about current and future cake projects, and wake up with new ideas every day.

This is my calling. I wish it was to cure cancer, or achieve peace in the Middle East, but it's not. I am called to cake.

And really, wouldn't it be a sad world without cakes? They mark the milestones in our lives. The Christening cake, birthdays, First Communion, Bar and Bat Mitzvah, Quinceaneara, Sweet Sixteen, Graduations, Engagement, Showers, the glorious Wedding cake, 40th, 50th, Retirement, 80th, 90th, 100! Imagine any of these celebrations without a cake.

I am well on my way to achieving an ambition of mine, which is to make the wedding cake of someone whose Christening cake I also did. Only a few more years to wait!

Why this blog? I have 2 marketing majors in my family, my kids. And they tell me this is indispensable to modern business. I am also, (Lord help me) going to be on Facebook, and Twitter. I don't even know that that is, but we paid top dollar for their busness educations, so I am going to take their advice and join the 21st century.
